Theme:

With the commemoration of World War I and New Zealand’s involvement in Gallipoli, the keyword of ‘conflict’ emerged quite naturally. In the context of translation and interpreting, it is also relevant as our professions are often essential for international communication around external conflicts. The founding document at the heart of New Zealand’s history is itself a translation forged in the midst of a conflict that still impacts on daily life across the country.

As communicators, translators and interpreters are the unavoidable albeit neutral link between countries, business entities and individuals in their professional environment. Should we however remain neutral when conflicts affect our own internal professional process? We are faced with international competition and have to deal with a broad range of issues around rates and payment, machine translations and fuzzy matches, all the while defending our qualifications; conflicts when dealing with customers; conflicts when interpreting between opposing parties in court or elsewhere; conflict of cultures that leads to misunderstandings in business negotiations etc..

It is through a professional code of conduct and efficient, effective communication that we contribute to positive outcomes both for our clients and for ourselves.

Join our conference to share experiences with colleagues, and hear about solutions to avoid and resolve situations of conflict. Feel empowered in the knowledge that the industry has a number of ideas to help our profession move forward and gain valuable tools and insights to turn this knowledge into practice.
